Compost Bin Giveaway!

Friday 17 May 2013

As part of International Composting Awareness Week (6-12 May) Care for Hedland Environmental Association with support from their Principal Partner BHP Billiton Iron Ore will be giving away heavily subsidized compost bins from their stall at Welcome to Hedland Night markets on Friday 17th May.

Did you know that approximately 50% of the rubbish Australians put in their garbage bin could be put to better use in the garden as compost and mulch. What is even more alarming is that when this waste breaks down ‘anaerobically’ (without air) in landfill it causes over 3% of Australia’s total greenhouse gas emissions annually through the production of methane gas (which has 25 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide).

On the other hand, composting of this organic material and adding it to your garden greatly increases carbon in the soil, reducing the effects of climate change. In addition to this, using compost in the garden reduces the need for water by an average of 30%, greatly improves soil quality and helps grow beautiful fruit and veggies, what more could you ask for!

So come on down to the Welcome to Hedland night markets and visit the Care for Hedland stall for your compost bin and start saving the environment and your pocket all whilst improving your garden!
