The issue of waste management is of increasing significance for Hedland as the township continues to grow.

Fortunately the environmental conscience of the community is also ever-growing and is particularly evident through the activities of the Waste Management Program.

The program provides incentives and solutions for the community to participate in responsible waste disposal and encourages public action to clean up both residential and natural areas of the town.

Care for Hedland has introduced several waste management incentives to offer recycling opportunities as well as community clean-up events. The program’s ‘Street Blitz’ and support for Clean Up Australia Day events are great initiatives for volunteers of all ages to get involved in helping make Hedland a cleaner, safer and healthier town.

The highly successful ‘Cash for Trash’ program promotes the recycling of glass bottles and aluminium cans for a small reimbursement as well as the collection and recycling of plastic bottles and cardboard (unpaid).  Cash for Trash is a monthly event and requires volunteers to assist in counting of bottles and the smooth-running of the operation.  There can never be too many volunteers to help out so if you would like to participate, please check the up-coming Cash for Trash dates here and get involved!

The Waste Management Program is hoping to expand opportunities for community and industry recycling through obtaining machinery that will allow for a greater diversity of materials to be re-used.

Recycled products will then be made available for use back into the Hedland community. If you would like more information on the Care For Hedland Waste Management Program email Care for Hedland Chairperson, Kelly Howlett at info@careforhedland.com.au.

Care for Hedland have recently added a new events based recycling program to their workload as well. Through funding from the Keep Australia Beautiful Foundation they have been able to add plastic collection at Cash for Trash as well as also having new bins at different events around town were people can recycle their plastic and glass bottles and cans. These bins are red, yellow and orange so be sure to look out for them!
